A mighty rich man began to build a wonderful, large sanctuary for the people to shelter them; a place to gather together, where all could come in times of trouble.
He used his fortunes to lay the foundations, build the walls and the roofs, the gardens and fountains.
After a long time it was finally done, this mighty edifice was the pride of the city and all who saw it lauded its magnificence.
The mighty man, however, had suffered great loss in his endeavor. His money and his health were so depleted that he himself went homeless, hungry, and ill.
His pride and fortune gone, he slowly made his way up the grand steps, past the beautiful fountains, gardens, and wonderful artwork he had given so much to create.
When he was at the inner gate and about to go in, one of the guardians of the building saw him and said, “Who is this dirty beggar? Get him out of here! He is spoiling the beauty of this place!” He was quickly dragged to the steps and thrown down them into the street.
