Develop a Firm Foundation: Luke 6:46-49

Develop a Firm Foundation: Luke 6:46-49

In Luke 6:46, Jesus says; “Why do you call  me Lord Lord and do not do what I say?”

He continues in verse 47; “Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and acts on them, I will show you whom He is like. He is like a man building a house who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock, and when the flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house, and could not shake it because it had been well built.”

Two things stand out in these words:

First, the foundation is laid upon the rock. This rock is “the word which I have spoken.” Jesus says if we act on the words and not simply hear them, we are building our spiritual foundation on that which is solid and immovable, this is the rock.

Second, “when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it.”

“He who hears and acts upon my words.” This is the one who builds the solid house which will not be moved by the flood. Verse by verse, brick by brick, we build our house. Yes, the Word is the brick, but a brick must be put in the wall by us. We must take the Word, act upon it, and the faith which we practice will be the mortar which creates the strength to stand against the floods.

And be sure, the floods will come. So, let us build up a wall, strong and lasting, a living structure, a Temple, and strengthen it with the faith we live each day;

Practicing the Word,

Exercising the Word,

Living the Word out in fear and holy reverence before our great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.
